pierre bastien is a french legend that has collaborated with artists such as robert wyatt, jac berrocal and jaki liebezeit, to name just a few. he is also very well known for his compositions based on home-made mechanical instruments, designed and constructed by bastien himself. pure diy. using these instruments he would create a heady experimental mix incorporating poetry and some far-out music, all in all very intriguing and original indeed. needless to say when the notion of pierre bastien and versatile records potentially making a project together arose, it was a total honour! throw into the mix esteemed electro-acoustic composer eddie ladoire and now we ve really got something interesting. eddie and pierre met when they appeared on the same concert bill together and they decided to collaborate further with versatile being the platform for the fruits of this particular project. the original version of phantom dance is a beautiful piece where bastien plays a trumpet into some water blended with electronic drums and mellow organs lines, creating an otherworldly, subterranean jazz vibe for the freaks. suzanne kraft, the la native / amsterdam based producer turns the original into some mechanical broken funk vibes while rotterdam s oceanic delivers 2 fresh, reimagined versions. one for for the club with a strong afro beat feel while the other one is a slower affair for the after hours. both mixes bringing something new to the table. a truly original and interesting release from some very talented people, for those with open ears and open minds!

search the name ‘burnis moleme and the returns are sparse. you’ll discover that his track ‘where is the answer’ appeared on soundway’s excellent nigerian disco compilation, doin’ it in lagos. and there are a few entries about this pmg re-issue of light my fire. but other than that, he seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. he’s not even a minister of religion, the career path most nigerian stars from the 80s chose to follow. thankfully, we still have light my fire. produced by former funkee jake sollo and backed by a hot team of session musos including friday pozo, nkono teles and joseph ‘jojo’ kuo, burnis delivered a slab of slick afro disco boogie for the ages.

kalita records release their first in a series of coveted reissues, starting with the three choice cuts from nst cophie s 1980 private press ivory coast afro-disco album mon da center. after moving to paris in 1976 and having played with other well-known bands such as n bamina, osibisa, and with numerous artists including jimmy hyacinthe and papa wemba, mon da center was ernest s first solo album. recorded at studio caroline in paris s 20th sector over the space of one week, this self-funded ultra-rare album regularly exchanges hands for eye-watering prices. pretty much unknown except to the most hardened of diggers, bian kou , e clolo and mioukouna are guaranteed to set any dance floor alight, with hypnotic afro-disco grooves, killer drums and angelic female vocals.

recorded in the beginning of the 80s and self-produced by itadi in 1983, this obscure album contained deep soul and controversial rare grooves backed by the 5 band members called the afro funk band de lome. itadi s music is unique, in his second album, he kept the same recipe: a mixture of soul, reggae, hi-life and funk, with heavy lyrics which sounds like slogans and caused him big trouble after its release. he was obliged to escape the country to usa.a real definition of a revolutionary musician! this deluxe lp contains also two unreleased tracks, interview, and photos and was fully licensed with his family.

at the third new interplanetary melodies astral journey stopover, it was mandatory to catch an italian project deeply inspired by the sun ra visionary realm, expressing contemporary trials of hybridising jazz with artful electronica. so ra toth and the brigantes orchestra landed on vinyl grooves for the label, after having previously appeared on the likes of mathematics and berceuse heroique. behind the sound, we find the elusive and unpredictable genius of the well-respected producer marcello napoletano.
